We absolutely loved our stay in Kyoto. Masaru provided lots of handy information about the area and he was quick to respond to questions that we had. The townhouse was stunning and we loved the mix of tradition and modern features. The heating worked really well over the colder nights and we felt very cosy. The townhouse is also situated in an amazing traditional part of Kyoto.

This is the coolest houseI have stayed in Kyoto! There are bicycles available so you can also enjoy a ride in the Gion town. It is so spacious for two of us with kitchen and washing machine. Masaru is super helpful and gave us instruction on how to get to his place from Tokyo. I would definitely stay here again when I visit Kyoto!

We really liked this property! It has a lot of character. The owner provided lots of information about where things are and how to make our stay in Kyoto more comfortable. Thanks for letting us drop off our luggage before check-in time. And thank you for suggesting Sagan to eat at. We ate there twice! This was our favorite place to stay on our vacation and we would definitely come back here again.

Beautiful townhouse in a great location. Would definately stay at this property again. The owner takes pride in his property and has a detailed user guide to everything in his house as well as local restaurants and attractions. The user guide is written so non-Japanese speakers can understand everything which was greatly appreciated. The townhouse is welcoming, clean and very comfortable. Thank you for making our stay in Kyoto so wonderful. I wish we could have stayed longer!!!!!!

Lovely old home in quiet and traditional neighbourhood. Host provided a great orientation and lots of helpful information including maps, sights to see, transit and restaurants. We loved our stay.

We had a wonderful time staying at the Unoan traditional townhouse, it was everything that was represented on the website. Masaru and his wife waited for us to arrive to give us information on places to visit and to eat. The townhouse was very clean and comfortable with modern conveniences and was very well situated to use as a homebase. My husband and I met 2 of our children at the Osaka airport and took the JR train to the Kyoto train station, about 1hour and 15 minutes. If you take the Shinkansen it cuts time down to 15 minutes. We took a cab to the townhouse which was only a 10 minute drive and cost 1000 yen. Since our son speaks Japanese he was our tour guide, I don't know if we would have seen half as much as we did without him, he knew how to navigate the train system well. We also used the 4 bikes to ride to some of the different temples so we were able to really experience the city. We visited Himeji Castle, Fushimi-Inari (The Red Gates) Temple, Sheridan Kinkaku, (The Golden Pavillion.) Another temple from the 8th century that used to host the kuydo archery. We took a day trip back to Osaka to do the Mario Go Kart riding for 2 hours thru the city, (which was a lot of fun), and then did a baseball game that same evening. We also attended an afternoon tea with a Maiko which was only a block away from the townhouse. We would have loved to do more, and we were busy for the 6 days that we were there.
The home is air-conditioned, which was a huge relief since the temperatures were in the high 80's and the humidity 100%.
All in all this was a great experience and we wouldn't hesitate to go back and stay at Masaru's townhouse again.

Host Response

Sorry for the late response. We've come back and received your gifts. Amazing! They look good as finger food. Colorado is famous for beer? Did you know that my wife Atsumi love beer? Steamboat is famous for ski, balloon and hot spring? We want to go there someday! Thank you very very much!

Wonderful! Exactly as described by other reviews. Authentic old merchant house. Good location. Pleasant, helpful hosts. So glad we chose this home versus staying in a boring tourist hotel! Much more memorable experience.

Out stay in Kyoto was wonderful. Staying at Unoan was a major reason for such a pleasant experience. It is a beautifully kept and restored machiya. Masaru-san met us at the beginning of our stay and was a knowledgeable and gracious host. His recommendations for food and local sights were perfect. The location is within walking distance of many places to explore. Highly recommend staying here if you visit Kyoto.

Thank you so much for having us! Masaru was an incredibly kind host, waiting very late at night for our arrival, despite us getting lost. The house was beautiful and we really enjoyed our stay. Being able to stay in a traditional townhouse was definitely a big highlight of our trip in Japan.
