Datong District

Datong District

One of the oldest districts in Taipei, Datong has experienced a renaissance of sorts in recent years. Once a prominent shopping and business district, its relevance began to wane as nearby neighbourhoods began luring consumers away with their shopping developments and other attractions. But thanks to a resurgence of independent businesses along Datong’s Dihua Street, as well as the district’s unique Japanese and Qing period architecture, Datong’s popularity has been once again growing.

The district’s core is the kilometre-long Dihua Street. Here is where you’ll find up-and-coming art galleries, new craft shops and cafés nestled next to older residents such as tea merchants and vendors selling dried fruits and nuts. To experience the best of Taiwan’s famed high-mountain oolong tea, a visit to and a chat with the sellers along Dihua is a must. The tea shops here are also a great place to find unusual clay teapots and other tea paraphernalia.

Ningxia Road is home to Datong’s night market, which is dominate by food stalls. You can indulge your stomach with some of the best Taiwanese street food including the famous fermented stinky tofu, oyster omelettes and Taiwan sausages. Ningzia Road is narrow and the market can get very crowded but it offers a more authentic local feel than some of the city’s other markets. For an even more local vibe, and a bit quieter one at that, the Yansan Night Market is a good option, promising lots of tasty no-frills food. For daytime eating, Dihua Street’s many food stalls are known to be some of the best in town.

One of the joys of walking through Datong is discovering the period architecture that lines the streets. You can still see examples of well-preserved colonial Japanese architecture as well as traditional Chinese façades and structures inspired by the European Baroque style. Some of the most interesting buildings are to be found in the streets branching off from Taipei (or Chien-Cheng) Circle. A few temples worth a visit in Datong include the Taipei Confucius Temple, originally built during the Qing era and the adjacent Dalongdong Baoan Temple. The Dalongdong Temple was awarded an UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Culture Heritage Conservation. The lively Xiahai Temple, a small historic temple primarily used by local residents, can be found on Dihua Street.

Datong’s old-yet-new vibe is also evident in two of its best museums. The new is very much on display in the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, which showcases primarily Taiwanese art, with occasional exhibitions from international artists. The Taiyuan Asian Puppet Theatre Museum aims to preserve and promote traditional Asian puppet culture and is particularly well-suited for kids.

Datong is quickly and easily accessible via Taipei’s excellent metro system. If you plan on exploring a lot of the city, be sure to purchase a Taipei Metro Pass, valid for either 24, 48 or 72 hours. The passes are available at any metro station information counter. Getting to Datong from the Taipei Airport (TPE) takes about 40 minutes by bus or about 30 minutes by taxi. Once there, walking is the best way to ensure you don’t miss any of Datong’s fascinating nooks and corners.
